First semester: evolution of classical Islamic civilization in its Near and Middle Eastern heartland. Second semester: the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires; Islam in central, east, and southeast Asia; traditional Islamic society; and the problems of colonialism, imperialism, and modernization.
