Qualified Unemployed Workers Tuition Waiver

Current Rutgers or visiting students that have secured an Unemployed Person Job Training Form (Tuition Waiver Program) for a Summer Session course at Rutgers University-Newark from a NJ Department of Labor & Workforce Development One-Stop Career Center must visit the Office of Summer & Winter Sessions to initiate the certification process prior to registration. Certification is by appointment only, please email summersession@newark.rutgers.edu or call 973-353-5112 to schedule an appointment. Students may not register if they did not complete the certification process. Registration takes place on the first day of the session in which the tuition waiver applies to only. The Employee Development Plan, Tuition Waiver Form, and all certifying documents must be original and presented in person to the Office of the Registrar, Blumenthal Hall 3rd Floor at time of registration.

If you are a visiting student, you must complete and submit a non-Rutgers Visiting Student Registration Form through the Office of Summer & Winter Sessions Application Portal, no later than five (5) business days prior to your certification appointment. Students who wish to take courses in more than one session must obtain a Tuition Waiver Form and Development Plan for each session. Students must make an appointment to certify during the dates listed above during each session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Qualified Unemployed Workers Tuition Waiver students may not use a special permission number (SPN) to register for a closed course. However, students may obtain a special permission number from the instructor or the department to register for a course that has a restriction code.

No. A separate tuition waiver and development form must be presented for each session a student wishes to certify. Students may not certify for both sessions at the same time. Students must follow the certification and registration dates listed above. Please contact the Office of Summer & Winter Sessions, summersession@newark.rutgers.edu or 973-353-5112, to schedule an appointment to be certified. 

All documents are required and must be presented at the time of certification. All documents must be original and contain the appropriate authorization from the One-Stop Career Center. 

Participants are responsible for a $20 registration fee each semester or session, as well as any non-mandatory student user fees or course-specific/program-specific charges (lab fees, textbooks, etc.). Students should visit the Student Accounting Services, Blumenthal Hall- 3rd Floor, at the time of registration for a full list of fees. 

Once registered, students may not add courses without approval from the Registrar's Office. Any participating student who adds a course without this approval will be deregistered from the unapproved course. Section changes are permitted in the Summer Session during the Change of Course Period if the new section is not closed to further enrollment. Students may withdraw from a course after the session has started, with a "W" grade. Participants may not register as a tuition-paying student in any course during the same semester or session in which they are utilizing the waiver benefit for another course. 

Students must certify for a course prior to registration. Students who have missed the certification dates for Summer Session I are still eligible to certify for courses offered in Summer Session II.
