COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Analyzes the ways in which the fantastic (a narrative mode that creates tension between the natural and supernatural) in American literature and cinema is in dialogue with American cultural history, particularly with respect to issues of race, gender, and class. Filmmakers studied will include David Lynch and Guillermo del Toro, and we will study a range of authors from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Toni Morrison.
