The United Nations estimates that around 80% of persons displaced by national and international conflicts are women and children. This class will seek to understand how and why women are consistently among the most vulnerable persons when it comes to war and conflict, and will investigate the complex politics of gender that arise within war and conflict. We will study both the ways that war narratives are inevitably constructed around notions of gender and sexuality, and we will also examine the roles that women play in the execution and aftermath of twentieth and twenty-first century wars. We will pay particular attention to the current ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and evaluate how the international 'War on Terror' utilizes notions of gender and sexuality in its many endeavors.
