The course provides historical perspectives on Ukraine's foreign relations and examines the trajectory of its foreign policy since independence in 1991 till the Orange Revolution and beyond. It focuses on Ukraines's relations with its major partners: Russia, Europe and the US, and Ukraine's role at the United Nations. The format of the course will encourage active dialogue and analytical reflection on the part of the students. It is delivered by a career diplomat and is aimed at both graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

This course provides a comprehensive survey of mass media's role in politics and the impact of the political environment on the press. It investigates the major media platforms (print, radio, television, and the Internet) and how each shape political culture. While the scope of the course is global, much attention is paid to the American media landscape. Other regions to be covered include the former Soviet Union, the Arab World, East Asia, and Europe. Special topics to be explored include: news management, transnational media empires, the CNN effect, infotainment, "fake news," the mass-mediation of terrorism, and Al-Jazeera.

Based on the assumption that the method of observation often creates the phenomena or influences the conclusions, the student uses a number of political science methodologies to study one subject; methodological approaches may include survey analysis of public opinion, including questionnaire construction and validation, use of computer and quantitative methods, content analysis, planning, programming and budgeting (PPB), decision-making theory, game theory, and communications theory.
