CERTIFICATE IN PORTUGUESE & LUSOPHONE WORLD STUDIES

The Summer Institute Certificate Program in Portuguese & Lusophone World Studies offers four classes--two sequential semesters in elementary Portuguese language and two classes in Portuguese literature (conducted in English). The Certificate in Beginners Portuguese & Lusophone World Studies is awarded to those students who successfully complete the three required courses, two courses in language and one in literature. Please check course descriptions carefully for prerequisites.

Required Courses (only one of the two literature classes is required):

Elementary Portuguese Language I
Elementary Portuguese Language II
Portuguese Literature in English Translation I or
Portuguese Literature in English Translation II or
Portuguese Literature Elective

The Institute offers students a dynamic classroom experience with seasoned Rutgers University faculty. Each Summer Institute course is three credits and counts toward the completion of the Portuguese Studies minor and other undergraduate degrees at Rutgers-Newark and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. We welcome all college students, professionals, and members of the community. Students may take three classes to earn the certificate, or they may take the classes individually.

Reading and discussion of major authors and texts representative of Portugal's rich literary tradition.

BRAZILIAN & LUSOPHONE WORLD LITERATURE IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION (3 cr.)

Reading and discussion of literary works representative of the different literary trends, movements, and authors of Brazil and Lusophone Africa.  Two-term sequence covers early 19th century up to the present.

This class will be conducted in English and fulfills the literature requirement. This class provides a survey of 20th-century Portuguese film, exploring the interplay between literature and cinematic narrative.
