Schools & Colleges Offering Summer Session Classes

Arts & Sciences

The Newark College of Arts and Sciences enrolls more than 60 percent of the undergraduates at Rutgers-Newark and is the largest school on campus. With majors in almost 40 fields, the curricula at NCAS combine the advantages of a liberal arts foundation with the specialized training necessary for a specific career. Degrees awarded include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts and the Bachelor of Science.

University College is designed for adult students who have obligations during the day and attend class in the evening or on Saturday. Degrees awarded include the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science.

College of Nursing

The College of Nursing is recognized as one of the finest nursing schools in the nation. Formed in 1956, the college is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. It offers an RN-BS program, a Master of Science degree offering clinical expertise for Advanced Practice Nursing, and the only Ph.D. program in Nursing in New Jersey . Students in the masters program can pursue specialty clinical options in Acute Care of the Adult and Aged; Advanced Practice in Pediatric Nursing; Advanced Practice in Women's Health; Community Health Nursing; Family Nurse Practitioner; Care of the Adult and Aged Nurse Practitioner; and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools" ranked the College of Nursing's Psychiatric/Mental Health specialty program as one of the top five in the nation; the master's program was ranked 59th of 175 schools.

While the College of Nursing has traditionally drawn from top hospitals and clinics in the area for support of its teaching and research mission, the school has also gone into the community with its health care partners to establish centers and programs to serve the needs of some of the state's most vulnerable populations.

School of Criminal Justice

The School of Criminal Justice is a major national and international center for scholarly research on all aspects of policing, delinquency, crime, and criminal justice administration. This provides a basis for its educational programs that also fulfill public service obligations by helping to address the needs of criminal justice agencies within the city, state, nation, and world.

Through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, undergraduate students can obtain B.A. or B.S. degrees in Criminal Justice. On the graduate level, the School of Criminal Justice offers B.S./M.A., M.A., M.A./J.D. (in collaboration with the Rutgers School of Law-Newark), and Ph.D. programs. Each program provides instruction and research opportunities that prepare students for positions in research, teaching, and criminal justice system management and policymaking.

Rutgers Business School

Rutgers Business School offers undergraduate and graduate programs that equip graduates with the skills they need to function in today's diverse global business environment. With a focus on a team approach, the curriculum teaches students to critically reason, gather and weigh evidence, and bring an innovative and thoughtful approach to problem solving in real-world business settings. The business programs at Rutgers-Newark are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The school was ranked as one of the top business schools in the country, according to Business Week's 2000 MBA rankings. Fewer than 70 of the more than 1,200 business schools in the United States are ranked by the prestigious business publication, and Rutgers was one of only 31 public institutions to receive this distinction. Graduates of Rutgers Business School include C.E.O.s and C.F.O.s for leading corporations.

On the graduate level, students can earn an MBA on a full or part-time basis, as well as an Executive MBA, an International Executive MBA, or an MBA in Professional Accounting. A JD/MBA and a JD/Professional Accounting MBA are offered in conjunction with the Rutgers School of Law-Newark. Other joint degree programs include the MPH/MBA and MS in Biomedical Sciences/MBA, which are offered in conjunction with the Graduate School-Newark. A joint MD/MBA is offered with UMDNJ. Post MBA certificates are also available. Other graduate degree options include a Master of Quantitative Finance, Master of Accountancy in Taxation, a Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting, and a Ph.D. in Management.

Graduate School-Newark

The Graduate School-Newark is dedicated to the advancement of scientific and human knowledge in an environment that encourages scholarly inquiry and intellectual growth. Graduate students are expected to develop the analytical and creative skills required for original scholarship, research, and problem solving, as well as a thorough understanding of an academic discipline.

The Graduate School offers Master's programs in Applied Physics, Biology, Behavioral and Neural Sciences, Chemistry, Nursing, Economics, English, Environmental Sciences, Geological Sciences, Global Studies, History, International Studies, Jazz History, Liberal Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and Public Administration. A Master's degree in Public Health (M.P.H.) is also offered through a partnership with NJIT, UMDNJ, and the Public Health Research Institute. Ph.D. programs are available in Applied Physics, Behavioral and Neural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Criminal Justice, Environmental Science, Global Affairs, Mathematical Sciences, Psychology, and Public Administration. The Graduate School also offers joint programs with NJIT, including the M.A. and M.A.T. in History, the M.S. in Computational Biology, the M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Physics, the M.S. and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, and the Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences. The M.D./Ph.D. is a joint program with UMDNJ. A Ph.D. in Urban Systems is a joint degree program with NJIT and UMDNJ.

School of Public Affairs & Administration

The School of Public Affairs and Administration at Rutgers-Newark is dedicated to four goals: competence, diversity, knowledge, and service.

The school offers a Masters in Public Administration, an Executive MPA, and a Ph.D. degree, as well as professional certificates in various areas including Non-Profit Management and Urban Educational Administration.

The MPA Program is rated very highly by U.S. News and World Report, ranking 11th in the nation in public administration and 26th in the broader category of public affairs.
